Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Bode Buccal DNA Collector
The Bode Buccal DNA Collector is supported by all major manufacturers’ (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Promega, and QIAGEN) direct amplification kits. Bode Cellmark’s technical services team can provide recommended protocols and cycle numbers to achieve a high first-pass success rate.
Yes. The Buccal DNA Collector has been treated with an electron beam, making it safe for use in your mouth.
The Bode Buccal DNA Collector is a direct collection system. The sample processed in the laboratory is the same sample that was collected from the individual’s mouth. As a direct collection system, it does not require the transfer step that is necessary when using treated cards.
Buccal collection is a non-invasive DNA collection method that eliminates risks associated with handling and transferring blood samples. Additionally, the process of collecting, processing and storing is significantly less expensive when using buccal samples.
The Bode Buccal DNA Collector should be stored in a cool, dry environment. A desiccated storage system is recommended for storage in order to control humidity.
The Bode Buccal DNA Collector is composed of 100% cotton filter paper. Due to this property, it is compatible with most extraction and quantification kits. Internal testing has been based on QIAGEN extraction methods. Our technical services team can assist clients in optimizing extraction and quantification procedures for Buccal DNA Collector samples.

The Bode Buccal DNA Collector is compatible with both semi-automated and fully-automated punchers. The Bode Buccal 2 has a collector and card component with a conversation that makes the collector/cassette compatible with automated punchers and liquid handling robots.
Yes. Collection utilizing the Bode Buccal DNA Collector is a simple process that requires minimal training of collection personnel.
It is possible to obtain DNA from anywhere on the collection paper, as the entire surface is placed inside an individual’s mouth. The highest DNA yields can be obtained from the top (rounded end) of the collector. The lowest amount of DNA is found at the base. It is recommended to begin sampling from the upper tip of the collector.
The preferred sample size depends on the processing method. If performing a standard extraction, a 3.2mm or 4.7mm punch is recommended. If performing a direct amplification procedure, a 1.2 mm punch is recommended.
After a sample is collected on the Buccal DNA Collector, a small sample can be punched or cut out of the filter paper. The portion of the collector sampled can then be placed in a 96-well plate or microcentrifuge tube for downstream analysis.
Yes, Bode Technology offers several storage solutions that help to protect the integrity of the sample(s). A customized solution can be created for a client’s specific needs.
