The Advanced DNA Technical Workshops are designed to provide DNA training on the latest techniques and technologies to the forensic scientific community as well as the opportunity for scientists to openly share experiences from their laboratories. Leaders from various law enforcement and federal agencies will provide lectures, demonstrations, and mini-workshops on new technologies, new concepts and challenges in the DNA identification field.

Almost 20 years after the “trial of the century” we still talk about the O.J. Simpson case and how the evidence was handled at the trial. Because of that, Bode is excited to announce the Keynote Presentation: DNA Evidence in the O.J. Simpson Case
by Rockne Harmon, former Senior Deputy District Attorney for Alameda County.
In the years after the O.J. Simpson acquittal, most media accounts dismissed the seemingly overwhelming DNA test results as having been either contaminated or planted, in attempts to rationalize the jury’s verdict. While these two theories were clearly argued by the defense, this presentation will allow the audience to decide whether there was any basis in fact for the jury’s verdict.
Principles of Courtroom Testimony Workshop, led by Rockne Harmon:
This workshop is designed to assist the forensic scientist to better appreciate their role in the judicial process. The discussion will help develop an understanding of the roles of opposing counsel and their respective responsibilities. Time will be spent explaining legal principles that underlie direct examination, cross examination, and expert testimony. Suggestions will be provided to assist the expert in developing an approach that will assist in ensuring that the expert’s testimony can be presented objectively and completely. The last part of the workshop will include a demonstration of some of these principles using actual casework reports and an experienced expert.
Forensic Paternity & Kinship Statistics – Calculating by Hand Workshop, led by Pamela Jarman Laboratory and Facility Manager, Bode Technology:
•Explanation of the statistical formula
•Step-by-step explanation of how to calculate, including many examples
•Practice questions to do while in the workshop with guidance available from the instructor
