Offender Databanking

Bode Technology’s experienced databanking team continues to help law enforcement agencies further the cause of justice by identifying thousands of criminals, while assisting in obtaining freedom of those proven innocent by DNA testing. Bode is the leading provider of U.S. databanking services, having analyzed and delivered over one-million databanking profiles, approximately 15% of the CODIS database for various federal, state and local authorities. Bode has assisted in reducing or eliminating convicted offender and arrestee backlogs in 26 U.S. states. Bode’s vast databanking experience has allowed for the development and optimization of protocols specifically designed to handle the high-throughput processing of different substrates such as buccal swabs, blood and saliva stained FTA and S&S paper, and Bode Buccal Collectors. This experience and optimization has allowed Bode to achieve a very high success rate with all substrates, obtaining a full profile from over 99.5% of all samples tested in a 200,000 sample set. Bode’s high success rate has allowed us to minimize the number of samples which have to be recollected due to insufficient sampling.

Bode uses cutting edge technology to provide exceptional quality, high throughput DNA analysis of convicted offender and arrestee samples that meets or exceeds the acceptance standards required for upload to the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Bode offers offender STR analysis on both the Hitachi gel electrophoresis and Applied Biosystems capillary electrophoresis(3100’s and 3130 XL’s) platforms. Bode has processed tens of thousands of samples using Promega’s Powerplex® 1.1, Powerplex® 2.1, Powerplex® 16 systems, and the Applied Biosystems AmpFlSTR® ProfilerPlus®, COfiler®, and Identifiler® PCR amplification kits. Samples are analyzed using Genotyper®, GeneMapper ID®, or STaRCall analysis softwares. The analysis includes Amelogenin and all 13 CODIS core loci - FGA, vWA, D3S1358, CSF1PO, TPOX, TH01, D18S51, D21S11, D8S1179, D7S820, D13S317, D5S818, and D16S539.

The implementation of automation and a customized Laboratory Information Management System (BodeLIMS) have played a key role in the success of this team. Numerous procedures have been developed and validated to utilize automation as much as possible in the laboratory in order to reduce the number of manual steps, and thereby minimize the potential for human error. Bode currently employs automated procedures on the BSD600 Duet, BioSprint 96, Biomek 2000, and both the Hamilton Star and Starlet robots. Bode has also developed an automated analysis software, BodeChecks, that is used as an additional quality check during analysis. BodeLIMS interfaces with the robots and has extensive sample tracking abilities and incorporated quality checks. BodeLIMS is used throughout the process, from the point of sample receipt to reporting, to ensure the reliability of the data that is generated.
Bode can provide customized data packages to meet the needs of any client laboratory. In addition to offender testing, Bode has the ability to generate DNA profiles for custom databases.
