Forensic botany is an under-utilized resource that can provide investigative
leads or convincing evidence relating to a variety of criminal investigations.
The identification of plant material can be used to place a suspect or
victim at a crime scene, demonstrate association with narcotic-related
plants, or infer a geographical location. The Bode Technology Group provides
DNA analysis of botanical trace evidence, and has developed a method to
extract, clone and sequence DNA of specific plant loci from single plants
or mixtures of plant material. We have validated this technique and used
it since 1999 on plant mixtures obtained from particulate material associated
with clothing, carpet, packaging, video tapes, air filters and soil.
