Sexual Assault Casework

More than 200,000 sexual assaults were reported in the U.S. in the year 2000. The number of actual rapes and sexual assaults was undoubtedly much higher. Historically, more than 40% of the DNA cases from rape victims reveal a profile foreign to the victim. This translates into the potential identification of more than 80,000 perpetrators each year. The recidivism rate for sexual assault perpetrators is one of the highest of all crimes. Therefore, it is critical to identify and incarcerate these individuals as quickly as possible.

The Bode Technology Group is currently assisting the New York City medical examiner's office by analyzing more than 225 sexual assault kits each month. By October 2002, The Bode Technology Group will have completed the analysis of more than 4,500 kits from New York City.

Even the smallest projects can have enormous impact. For example, The Bode Technology Group analyzed 50 sexual assault kits for the Baltimore city crime laboratory (featured on the television program 20/20). By testing just 50 sexual assault kits, nine perpetrators of violent crime were identified.
