Overview

Crime scenes are localized areas that are generally restricted to a few square meters. Every crime scene has a particular combination of plant assemblages. These plant combinations can provide a description for physical or trace evidence that can match or exclude reference samples from a crime scene or other evidentiary materials. In the past, pollen and plant histology have been used for plant identification. However, neither of these methods can assist in separation of mixtures of plant material or in plant individualization. The identification of a plant encompasses the variation within a whole kingdom, not just in one species, as in humans. Therefore, we developed robust molecular methods for analysis of botanical forensic evidence.
